Congress of Racial Equality
"Founded in 1942, CORE is the third oldest and one of the "Big
Four" civil rights groups in the United States. From the protests against
"Jim Crow" laws of the 40's to the "Sit-ins" of the 50's and the "Freedom
Rides" of the 60's; through the cries for "Self-Determination" in the 70's
and "Equal Opportunity" in the 80's to the struggle for community development
in the 90's, CORE has championed true equality for all people."
National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
A historic civil rights organization that has championed the cause
of equality for African-Americans and other minorities. "The history of
the NAACP, is one of blood sweat and tears. From bold investigations of
mob brutality, protests of mass murders, segregation and discrimination,
to testimony before congressional committees on the vicious tactics used
to bar African Americans from the ballot box, it was the talent and tenacity
of NAACP members that saved lives and changed many negative aspects of
American society."
National Urban League
The mission of the National Urban League is to assist African Americans
in the achievement of social and economic equality. The Board of Trustees
of the National Urban League and all of its affiliates reflect a diverse
body of community, government, and corporate leaders. The League implements
its mission through advocacy, bridge building, program services and research.

X: A Research Site
This site is dedicated to document the life and times of Malcolm
X. Includes a

This site offers a glimpse into the life of Huey P. Newton, one
of the founding members and leaders of the Black Panther Party, in Oakland,
California.

Hughes
Many essays and short writings by Langston Hughes are available
here. From the Modern American poetry Website. Includes a brief biography
and critical analysis of Hughes' works. See also: a biography of Langston

informative essay about this very influential American poet, along
with some of his poems. This site also has many articles and poems by African-American

W.E.B.
Du Bois: The Activist Life
Online Exhibit on W.E.B. DuBois, who was a scholar, author, co-founder
of the NAACP, crusading editor of various journals, international spokesperson
for peace and for the rights of oppressed minorities, who articulated the
strivings of African Americans and demonstrated the significance of Black
culture before a world audience.
Mary
McLeod Bethune - Photos and primary source documents.
Mary McLeod Bethune was recognized as one of the most influential
Afro-American women in the country with a postage stamp issued in her honor
and a statue of her erected in a park in Washington, DC. Bethune was active
in the fight against racism and served as an unofficial advisor to President
Roosevelt.
Pioneering
Cartoonists of Color
This site is a salute to Cartoonists of Color who paved the way
in the cartooning industry. This site features the early pioneers of Color
who created & drew comics & cartoons from the 1920s, to 1970s and
later. More often than not, when books were written about cartooning art,
African American cartoonists are not included, simply because their work
was ignored or purposely omitted. Many examples of their cartoons are included
here.

Just before 10:20 p.m. on July 17th, 1944, the worst home front
disaster of WII, occurred at a Naval pier in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Five thousand tons of ammunition in ships being loaded by black sailors
exploded, sending a blast more than 12,000 feet into the sky.

Documenting the American South
This database presents primary source materials documenting the

UNC--CH Academic Affairs Library. To date we have digitized and encoded

National Brotherhood of Skiers
The National Brotherhood of Skiers is an organization which brings
together African American ski clubs from across the country to ski and
have a good time. One of the purposes of the NBS during its creation was
to help get a black skier into the Olympics.
The National Bowling Association
NBA promotes friendship, sportsmanship and fellowship among its
members. It also serves as a recruiting agency and point-of-entry for black
bowlers who otherwise would not receive the encouragement, tutelage and
guidance needed to learn the game and develop the skills that are essential
to full enjoyment and successful competition.
