American Life In the Forties

American Memory Collections: Time: 1930-1949
This page shows all of the separate collections within the American Memory Web site. It allows you to focus on particular regions, peoples, occupations and ways of understanding what was going on during the time period.

Architecture and Interior Design for 20th Century America (1935-1955)
Over 29,000 images primarily of architectural subjects, including interiors and exteriors of homes, stores, offices, factories, historic buildings,homes of notable Americans, and of several U.S. presidents, as well as color images of the 1939-40 New York World's Fair.

Creative Americans: Portraits by Carl Van Vechten, 1932-1964
1,400 Portraits of literary figures, artists, and celebrities; scenic views, mostly in the Northeast. Includes African Americans, celebrities and prominent individuals, scenic views. Consists of 1,395 photographs taken by American photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) between 1932 and 1964.

The Forties: War and Peace
"It was the best of times and the worst of times: It's a Wonderful Life and six million Jewish deaths. ``White Christmas'' and black lists. Gas rationing and Guadacanal. Casablanca and Hiroshima. V-2 rockets and V-J Day." A look at the 1940s by the Oak Ridge National Laboratories, where top secret projects were carried out with atomic energy.

People At War
This exhibit highlights the contributions of the thousands of Americans, both military and civilian, who served their country during World War II.

Color Photographs From 1938-1944
Color Photographs from the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information, ca. 1938-1944. 1,600 Photographs of rural and small town America during the late 1930s and scenes of the defense and war mobilization effort from 1939-1944.

Social Security History
Exceptionally well presented collection of information on the history of the Social Security program and Social Security Administration. A mix of general-interest material and items that may appeal primarily to scholars. Graphics and photos abound, and there are sound and video clips.

"Screwball Comedies
A style of movie comedy that flourished during the Great Depression and into the first part of the 1940s decade. Helpful in understanding how Americans endured the hard times of that era.

Woody Guthrie
A popular folk singer and writer of the Thirties and Forties who had a major influence on American life, including Sixties rock music. Wrote: "This Land Is Your Land."

Old Time Radio Timelines
Major events and personalities in the history or Radio in America are presented here. The focus is on the current month. Audio files allow for listening to parts of selected episodes (RealAudio required for listening).

Roosevelt Biographies, Historical
The president through most of Thirties and Forties.

New Deal Network
Information about Roosevelt's program dealing with the Great Depression. Includes a very wide variety of resources relating to the 1930sand 1940s, as affected by the New Deal.

FDR Cartoon Collection
This site contains political cartoons from the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This preservation project is a cooperative venture of the AP Computer Math class and the AP United States History classes at Niskayuna High School.

The Holocaust

The Nizkor Project
"Welcome to Nizkor, a collage of projects focused on the Holocaust, and its denial, often referred to as Holocaust "revisionism.", a label we reject out of hand as being misleading and dishonest."

Anne Frank, Her Life and Times
Includes the following sections: Anne's Stroy, The Holocaust, The Diary, The Annex. "Over one million children under the age of sixteen died in the Holocaust. Anne Frank was one of them."

The "Final Solution"
"The origin of the "Final Solution," the Nazi plan to exterminate the Jewish people, remains uncertain. What is clear is that the genocide of the Jews was the culmination of a decade of Nazi policy, under the rule of Adolf Hitler. The "Final Solution" was implemented in stages."

Holocaust Museum Resources for High School Students
"This Student Outreach Site aims to provide an overview of the events of the Holocaust to students of high school age. The site is based on a series of articles describing these events. Each article is illustrated with maps and historical photographs."

Rescue in Denmark
"Throughout the Holocaust, millions of people silently stood by while they saw Jews, Roma (Gypsies), and other "enemies of the Reich" being rounded up and deported. Many of these bystanders told themselves that what they saw happening was none of their business. Others were too frightened to help. In many places, providing shelter to Jews was a crime punishable by death.... Denmark was the only occupied country that actively resisted the Nazi regime's attempts to deport its Jewish citizens."

Rescue and Resistance
Those who did aid Jews were motivated by opposition to Nazi racism, by compassion, or by religious or moral principle. In a few rare instances, entire communities as well as individuals helped save Jews. They did so at tremendous risk. In many places, providing shelter to Jews was punishable by death.

The Mechelen Museum of Deportation and Resistance
This exhibition "allows us to understand how in Belgium nearly one out of two Jews perished during the Second World War. Furthermore, it is not only a museum about the deportation of Belgian Jews, but also about their resistance. Thanks to the support they received from the Belgian people, many managed to escape from their Nazi pursuers and their collaborators."

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition. 2000
This is a site for you to use when looking for unknown words or have the need of a Thesaurus.  This is edition is very easy to use and will be a good source to check work that you are doing.
 Merriam-Webster Dictionary
This is another source to check words for your work.  Also, this is an easy to use resource.  It is self explanitory and can give you any spellings you may need in you work.
Britannica Encyclopedia
If you are looking to start a search, this is the place to do it.  You may not know the subject you are looking for and need something to get you started.  The encyclopedia is used to give background for further research.  This is a very good place to begin, besides your text book.
WorldFactbook2000
The World fact book is another place to get background information that you need.  Information that may not be in the encylopedia could be in  this resource.  Although this is a good source, this is not the complete information guide you need.  Use this for statistics and other facts.

Maps and Flags
MapQuest : World Atlas
The study of history includes locating places on the globe.  You must have knowledge as to where the place is that you are studying.  This is the site for this.  You can locate places and find out good information about them.
World Maps
This is a great resource because of the ease it is to use.  Point, click and then you are looking at your query.
Distance
This is a very interesting resource.  If you would like to know the distance from your house to Pearl Harbor, this is the way you can do it.  You can also find the distance between places on the map.  If you know the names then you can find the distance.

Defence Glossary
This site is great.  It gives the perspective of a researcher, such as yourselves.  This is a very extensive resource and will assist in any research you are doing.
Any Country: Military Force
If you would like to know the military strength of a country in the world, go to this site. You can access documents that tell you the military might of countries throughout the world.
US History 1940-49
This is huge site.  There is a great amount of research material here.  Feel free to examine you subject fully here.
USA History
If you would like to make connections to your subject in terms of the USA, this is a great site. US History at your fingertips.
US WWII Aircraft
Simple, but extensive information on US WWII aircraft.
Yahoo Index
Another giant site.  This is full of information and links to an extensive collection.
Wartime Journal
This site will contain periodicals and archives of peridicals you may use.  Also, on this site is a portal to other links on the subject of war.
Modern Military Information
This is another site that will allow you to search the current military strength of the country of your chioce.
Pearl Harbor
This is a primary source site that has the Pearl Harbor telegram notifing the Navy of the attack.
