All Movie Guide

Offers information about films, directors, cast and crew members, as well as writers, actors, with links between them all. Easy to use once you spend a bit of time with it.

The Internet Movie Database
This is a great place to visit if you want to find information about movie credits (i.e., director, actors and their roles, technical personnel, awards,) including links to additional information. The data is provided, in a large part, by contributors from all over the world.

MRQE: Movie Reviews Searcher
Provides multiple movie reviews of recent and past films. Quite comprehensive, and goes back several years. Includes links (if information is available) to The Internet Movie Database, which gives additional background on the film being reviewed.  For access to multiple reviews, see also: metacritic:Film

Movie Mom at Yahoo!
Reviews of past and current films from the parent's point of view. "The reviews on the site are written by the Movie Mom herself, Nell Minow, a film critic and mother of two teenagers." Also includes guidelines and tips for parents, all-time best, recommended books and Web sites. For family oriented reviews, see also: Kids-In-Mind and Screenit.Com.

Offers information about films, directors, cast and crew members, as well as writers, actors, with links between them all. Easy to use once you spend a bit of time with it.

American Cinema
This is a free, video series on film history consisting of 10 one-hour and 3 half-hour streaming video programs. Using clips from more than 300 of the greatest movies ever made, this series explores film history and American culture through the eyes of over 150 Hollywood insiders. It consists of in-depth treatments on topics such as Romantic Comedy, The Combat Film, Film Language, and Film Noir, that explore film as a powerful economic force, potent twentieth-century art form, and viable career option.

Based on the Book
Lists films that were based upon a published book. It lists the title of the book, film, author of the original book, and year of the film's release. All movies listed have been released in 1980 or later, and give the most recent version of the film.

The Greatest Films
Excellent source of information about most of the very best films of all times. The reviews and background information provided are top notch, and go deeply into the film's background, characters, plot and related films. Very interesting Web site that is entertaining and informative. Includes sections on film quotes, famous scenes, film posters, and much more!

No Place for A Woman
Check here to learn about a style of film called "film noir". This genre arose during and after WWII, and often centered on detectives, and especially included mysteries. One of the most famous of these was "The Maltese Falcon". This Web site includes a number of helpful essays, as well as links to a wealth of information about films of this type.

The Oscars (Academy Awards)
The official Web site of the Academy Awards. Find the winners of past Oscars, the award given annually for excellence in film making.

Teach With Movies
Find out how to use popular, classic films to teach and learn basic knowledge and facts, as well as to develop character. Includes "Learning Guides to each recommended film describe the benefits of the movie, possible problems, and helpful background. Discussion questions, bridges to reading, projects and links to the internet are also provided."

Teachers' Guides to the Filmmaking Arts
Offers six informative teaching units on the various arts related to filmmaking: Screenwriting: The Language of Film; Cinematography: Capturing Images on Film; Film Editing: Manipulating Time and Space; Art Direction: The Visual Language of Film; Animation: Creating Movement Frame by Frame; Sound and Music; The Power to Enhance the Story. Although created for the classroom, it is excellent for self-instruction. Each unit is focused on the particular craft, and also includes its role in film history.

Brief Timeline of American Literature, Music, and Movies
This collection provides descriptions and samples of the literature, music, and films available during the period 1890-1929. Films are listed with their principal star or director. Music files on this page are in RealAudio unless otherwise noted. Because they reflect the attitudes, beliefs, and prejudices of their times, some materials of this era may be offensive to listeners.

The place to BE, if you are interested in film making. Lots of well organized articles, interviews, and other helpful information displayed in an online magazine format.

Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904)
"Father of the motion pictures." One of the very first photographers to experiment with motion, and to project moving images. Part of his life was spent in California, where he created some of his most famous images and sequences. See also: Freeze Frame: Eadweard Muybridge's Photography of Motion at the Smithsonian. Heer is a biography from the BBC: Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904).

International Film Festival of Cannes, France
A famous festival for the world cinema where all styles, schools of thought and genres, without any limitation but with the permanent concern to help the blooming of the cinematographic language and art form. The Festival reveals as much as it reflects the evolution and trends in the world cinema while defending the notion of "cinema d'auteur for a large audience", which has discovered, established and honored directors that have become the masters of film making of their generation.

Pacific Film Archive
The University Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (UAM/PFA) is the principal visual arts center of the University of California at Berkeley. The Pacific Film Archive (PFA) is an internationally recognized center for the exhibition and study of cinema. Through its daily film and video screenings, collection, and study resources, the PFA is committed to increasing the understanding and appreciation of the art of cinema. This online film museum contains a large amount of information for the serious student of film study, and lost of neat stuff for the serious film buff as well.
