Artcyclopedia
Offers "a comprehensive index of every artist represented at hundreds
of museum sites, image archives.... have now indexed an estimated 80,000
works by 7,000 different artists." Search or browse by movement,
medium, name of artist, nationality, etc. Here is a link to Artcyclopedia's
section on Mannerism, the artistic style which gained popularity
in the period following the High Renaissance.
The Web Gallery of Art
"The Web Gallery of Art contains over 11,600 digital reproductions
of European paintings and sculptures created between the years 1150 and
1800. A considerable number of the pictures are commented and biographies
of the significant artists are given." You can go directly to the Search
Page, where you may look for artists, their works, specify dates,
locations and galleries or art forms if you like. Venetian
Artists and The Venetian School This section of the Web Gallery
of Art provides information and examples of the art and artists of Venice,
including the Renaissance.

Timeline of
(World) Art History
The Timeline covers from prehistory to the present day. Each page
includes representative art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection,
a chart of time periods, a map of the region, an overview, and a list of
key events. Accompanied by world and regional maps, it provides a linear
outline of art history, and allow visitors to compare and contrast art
from around the globe at any time in history.

Explains (and provides audio samples of) the different styles of
popular music, from bluegrass and country to gospel and rock. Includes
essays and background information on the styles, performers and other aspects
of popular music. Includes a glossary, discographies, and "music maps"
which trace the development of various styles, with a nice "decades" listing

Essentials
of Music
This site focuses on classical music, with
sections on composers and historical eras. The Eras section offers articles
and information covering the six main classical music periods, from the
Middle Ages to Twentieth Century. Each era is examined in terms of its
historical themes, musical context, style, and representative composers.

of their music.
Guide
to Medieval and Renaissance Instruments
Thirty-two musical instruments are described
in a series of articles in this guidebook. Included are short audio samples
of the instruments' sounds, and many pictures of the instruments being
played. Some of the instruments included are: bagpipe, dulcian, harp, kortholt,
organetto, racket, sacbut, and shofar.
The
Listening Room (Early and Classical Music)
There are now over 700 musical excerpts that are available for
listening online. Those from recently released titles are at the top of
the list. Search the page for your composer's name of the title of the
piece you want to hear.

Listen to these Midi versions of Renaissance music. They will give
you a sense of what the misic might sound like. Here are some other similar

Renaissance
& Baroque Music Chronology
Lists many important and influential events that occurred, as they
relate to and affect the history and development of music. Click on the
time period, and then the name of the person to read a list of the events
and accomplishments in their lives. If you scroll down the page, you can
see their lifespan compared to the others on the list.

Project: Galileo Timeline
"This timeline provides a detailed chronology of Galileo's life.
Within the text, there are links to longer texts and related resources.
Years are linked to the European Timeline, which provides a broad overview
of concurrent events in Europe." This is part of a larger site, which includes
buiographical information on Galileo and other important people and places

Epact: Scientific Instruments
of Medieval and Renaissance Europe
Epact is an electronic catalogue of medieval and renaissance scientific
instruments from four European museums. They include astrolabes, armillary
spheres, sundials, quadrants, nocturnals, compendia, surveying instruments,
and so on. Examples range from ordinary instruments for everyday use to
more extravagant and often lavish pieces destined for the cabinets of princes.
Includes a very informative glossary, and provides images of the instruments
along with their descriptions. Publisher: Museum of the History of Science,
Oxford.
The Geometry
of War 1500-1750
This virtual exhibit is focused on technological dimensions of
warfare. "The mathematicians of the Renaissance applied their geometry
to all manner of practical disciplines - from navigation and surveying
to cartography and perspective. Many new instruments were designed in this
context, as the collections of this museum amply demonstrate. This virtual
version of the exhibition includes Summaries which list the instruments
and books and also provide a way into the Catalogue with its Figures of

This is an amazing collection of links to detailed and focused
information about a wide variety of topics for The Renaissance in England
(and Europe also, to a certain degree.) Be sure to scroll all the way down

Poetry: 1250–1920
This superb poetry collection contains numerous separate collections
of poetry. The collections may be searched by keyword, and browsed via:
Indexes to Poems: Chronologic, Author, Title, First Line. Designed to be
easy to browse and enjoy, this site seems to be steadily growing.
Renaissance
The word Renaissance is French for "rebirth." It describes the
intellectual and economic changes that occurred in Europe from the fourteenth
through the sixteenth centuries. This site explores the Renaissance and
seeks to help users discover the forces that drove this rebirth in Europe,
and in Italy in particular. The Renaissance was an age in which artistic,
social, scientific, and political thought turned in new directions.

This page gives a brief overview and provides links to further
informaion about key events and perople in the English Renaissance of the
16th Century.
