The links below lead to taxonomic information, sample images, as well as scientific and general descriptions of the genus or species. Some resources are complicated to use, while others seem quite easy to browse or search. We have attempted to put the most useful and easiest to use near the top of each section.

General Vertebrate Information Resources & Databases

Integrated Taxonomic Information System
Find authoritative taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world.

Biology Browser
A collection of links to many of the Sub-Categories of Vertebrata. If you need assistance with your search, check out: How to Get Results with Biology Browser.

Species 2007 Annual Checklist- Catalogue of Life
Use to locate species. Click Animals, then enter name of species and search. Has information on 1,008,965 species and 79,393 infraspecific taxa, and also includes 538,364 synonyms and 414,075 common names. From list that appears, click on the one you want for data and link to automatic Google search with lots images!

UNEP-WCMC Species Database
Includes data on 74561 animals and 88761 plants of conservation interest as well as 94070 sub-species, stocks or synonyms. Gives taxonomic information, along with distribution, background notes, photos and more. Search by common or scientific name.

Animal Diversity Web: Subphylum Vertebrata
Vertebrates, which include fishes, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, all share a vertebral column, or a chain of bony elements (vertebrae) that run along the dorsal surface from head to tail and form the main skeletal axis of the body. The vertebral column surrounds and more or less replaces the notochord as the chief "stiffener" of the body in locomotion. Some characteristics shared by most or all vertebrates (in addition to those traits shared among all chordates) are described and linked to data and and images.

Spectrum of Life
All organisms on earth are related through descent from a common evolutionary ancestor. In the Spectrum of Life found here, we surveyed 28 major groups of organisms organized into basic divisions of life. Take the time to explore this amazing and beautiful diversity of life revealed before you. Important note: Once you are within a species section, be sure to click on the image to the left to reveal its data!

Introduction to Vertebrates
The diversity of vertebrates that has existed in the past and that diversity  exists today, and taken together, vertebrates extinct and extant can help us understand a great deal about the forces that have shaped the evolution of our world and ourselves in the past and help us predict and understand the future. Click on the buttons near the page bottom to learn more about Vertebrates. You can navigate deeper into the Vertebrate groups by selecting Systematics!

FishBase: Searcher
29900 Species, 224200 Common names, 44000 Pictures, 39400 References, etc.

Wildfinder
Type in all or part of a species name to search the database (only amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles are included at this time). Then see where it lives, and read general biome information for all the species that live there.
