Spanish American War

The World of 1898: The Spanish American War
The Library of Congress provides "resources and documents about the Spanish-American War, the period before the war, and some of the fascinating people who participated in the fighting or commented about it. Information about Cuba, Guam, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Spain, and the United States." Be sure to see the Special Presentations, and the Chronology to get a feeling of how this war developed.

The Spanish-American War in Motion Pictures
"This presentation features 68 motion pictures produced between 1898 and 1901 of the Spanish-American War and the subsequent Philippine Revolution. The Spanish-American War was the first U.S. war in which the motion picture camera played a role." The Special Presentation, The Motion Picture Camera Goes to War, gives a nice overview of the situation.

New York Public Library Online Exhibition of the Spanish American War
Just a little over One hundred years ago, Spain and the United States went to war over issues involving the Spanish island colonies in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. This exhibition provides information to help us understand what happened.

My Adventures as a Spy
The founder of the Boy Scouts was a former spy, and published a book about it during WWI. "My Adventures as a Spy by Sir Robert Baden-Powell was published in 1915 during the first years of the Great War. It reads like an adventure story as it recounts Baden-Powell's experiences in espionage during his military career."

Leni Riefenstahl, Film Director, etc.
German filmmaker who made powerful propaganda films during the Nazi era, and which also influenced many Hollywood directors. "Triumph of the Will", and "Olympia" are two of her most famous of that period. See also the BBC page on Leni.
